Back Liposuction - A Brief Overview

Liposuction to remove stubborn fat at the back is a popular procedure with both men and women who wish to get in shape and feel fit. Fat at the back, for a lot of us, can be a stubborn proposition.

Obese individuals with fat deposits at the upper, lower, and mid portions of the back suffer from posture-related pain, discomfort while sleeping, and their freedom in choice of clothes is curtailed. Liposuction refers to a surgical procedure aimed at removing fat deposits from particular parts of the body; when done for the back it is termed back liposuction or back lipo.

Fat deposit in the back can be classified into infra scapular fat; lumbo-sacral back fat present above the tail bone; buffalo hump back fat at the back of the neck; posterior axillary back fat; and posterior waist back fat which on the sides of the hips and also termed love handles.

Infra scapular fat is deposited between the shoulder blades and the waist is often a cause of embarrassment for women. This is subcutaneous fat with a propensity to bulge when a tight bra is worn. In obese individuals, men or women, this particular type of fat can create folds of skin heavy with fat. Close to this fat type is the posterior axillary fat located in the upper outer back region.

Infra scapular fat consists of fatty tissue and fibrous tissue. It is removed using micro-cannulas, the procedure is known as tumescent liposuction. The other alternative is to use ultrasonic waves to break the fat deposits. The fat deposits on the lower back are usually less dense and can be removed with greater ease. Similarly, the buffalo hump can be removed with clinical precision and excellent results.

Since the fat on the back is almost entirely dermal fat, it is not possible to dig deep to remove fat. Also overdoing superficial liposuction can injure the skin and lead to long-term skin discoloration. An overzealous cosmetic surgeon can damage the skin causing skin necrosis and scarring of the skin tissue that may be there is plain sight.

Back liposuction should not be considered as a treatment for obesity but more as an adjunct for your weight loss efforts to help you gain self-confidence and enjoy greater comfort in day to day activities. You will experience the harmony in appearance of the treated area with the rest of the body. Shapeliness is restored. However; you cannot hope to lose more than a couple of pounds through a back liposuction procedure. Also, it is in your interests that after the procedure you maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and proper diet. If not, the fat deposits will invariably return.

As with any surgical procedure, there will be preliminary sittings with the cosmetic surgeon who will try to understand your needs and will help you mould your expectations towards a more achievable and realistic goal with a back liposuction procedure. Your past medical history, weight, any present conditions, smoking habits, and age are some of the factors that will be taken into consideration before a back liposuction procedure.
